Geography - Intent, Implementation & Impact
Intent
At Cedarwood we value every child and aim to foster the individuality of their interests and experiences. Our exciting geography curriculum is carefully sequenced and planned to equip pupils with a growing understanding of and respect for the world, its places and people. It is our intention that we inspire in pupils a curiosity about and fascination with the world that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
Implementation:
At Cedarwood, The National Curriculum is used to plan progression of skills and knowledge and the curriculum is brought to life through the use of high quality resources, visits and visitors. Topics are planned to engage, inspire, support and challenge all pupils and equip them with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to help them better understand and appreciate diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments as well as the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
The National Curriculum for Geography aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
- understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time
- are competent in the geographical skills needed to: collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
- interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
- communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length
In addition, we aim for all pupils to:
- enjoy learning, and understand how geographical events have shaped the world we live in
- understand how climate change is affecting our world and steps that could be taken to reverse the trend
- understand where we live and how this compares to other location around the UK and the world
- are confident individuals able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives now and in the future
Assessment will take a number of forms:
- Feedback during lessons
- Regular short no threat retrieval practice
- Quick review questions at start/ end of lessons linked to previous learning and units including making links with other subject areas
- Use of Solo Taxonomy along with end of unit assessments
Impact
It is our intent that as pupils move through the school, their growing knowledge and skills help them to make sense of the world around them and deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes. We aim for all pupils to have developed a deep respect for the world, its people and places so that they are ready for the next stage of their education and lives.
